How much melatonin is too much? What labels don't tell you

Updated October 16, 2026 · 3 min read · Sources listed below

Short answer. There is no official maximum dose for adult melatonin in the US, but more is not better. Studies show modest effects: people fell asleep about 7 minutes faster on average. Labels are often inaccurate; a JAMA study found gummies contained 74% to 347% of the stated amount. Start with the lowest dose on the label, use it short term, and check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines.

Melatonin is a timing signal, not a sedative

Your brain releases melatonin in the evening as light fades. It tells your body that night has started. That is why melatonin helps most with timing problems such as jet lag, and less with waking at 3 AM.

How well does it work?

A 2013 meta-analysis of 19 trials with 1,683 people found melatonin shortened the time to fall asleep by about 7 minutes and added about 8 minutes of total sleep compared with placebo. The effect is real but small.

The label problem

In the US, melatonin is sold as a supplement, so the dose on the bottle is not checked like a medicine. When researchers tested 31 supplements, actual melatonin ranged from 83% less to 478% more than the label. In a 2023 JAMA study of 25 gummy products, the amount ranged from 74% to 347% of the label, and only 3 were within 10% of the stated dose.

So a "10 mg" gummy might contain much more or less. Choose products with third-party testing marks where you can.

Side effects and safety

The NIH's complementary health center says melatonin appears to be safe for most adults in the short term, but there is little information on long-term use. Reported side effects include headache, dizziness, nausea and next-day sleepiness. People taking medicines, especially blood thinners, and people with epilepsy should use it only under medical supervision.

When melatonin is the wrong tool

If you fall asleep easily but wake at 3 AM, a higher dose is unlikely to fix it. For chronic insomnia, CBT-I has much stronger evidence. If hot flashes wake you, treating them is the better target.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 mg of melatonin too much?

There is no official adult maximum, but studies show small effects and labels are often inaccurate. Start with the lowest dose on the label, and ask a pharmacist or doctor before using higher doses or using it for more than a few weeks.

Is 20 mg of melatonin too much?

That is far above what most products offer, and higher doses haven't been shown to work better for most people. Speak to a doctor before taking amounts like that.

Can you take melatonin every night?

Short-term use appears safe for most adults, but long-term safety data are limited. If you need it every night for weeks, talk to a clinician about the cause of your sleep problem.
