Sheets for night sweats: how to choose fabric, weave and layers
Short answer. Look for breathable natural or semi-natural fibres in a light weave: cotton percale, linen, or lyocell (often sold as Tencel). Avoid heavy sateen, flannel and polyester. Layer two thin covers instead of one thick duvet, use a breathable mattress protector and keep a spare cotton top by the bed.
What matters most
Bedding can't stop a hot flash. It can decide how fast you cool down afterwards and whether you wake up damp. Three things matter: how the fibre handles moisture, how open the weave is, and how easily you can shed a layer.
Fabrics compared
- Cotton percale: a plain, tight weave that feels crisp and cool. A safe first choice.
- Linen: very breathable and dries quickly. Feels textured at first and softens with washing.
- Lyocell (Tencel) and other wood-pulp fibres: smooth, absorbent and cool to the touch. Good if you dislike linen's texture.
- Bamboo viscose: similar feel to lyocell; quality varies a lot between brands.
- Cotton sateen: silkier but denser, so it holds more heat.
- Flannel and polyester microfibre: warm and less breathable. Best avoided if you wake hot.

Weave and thread count
A very high thread count usually means a denser fabric. For heat, a moderate thread count in a percale weave often sleeps cooler than a luxury sateen.
Build a cool bed
- Two thin layers on top, so you can throw one off without waking fully.
- A breathable mattress protector. Some waterproof protectors trap heat.
- Pillowcases you can flip to the cool side, or a spare by the bed.
- Loose cotton or linen nightwear, and a spare top within reach.
- A quiet fan for moving air across the bed.

Are bamboo sheets good for night sweats?
Bamboo viscose can feel cool and absorbent, similar to lyocell, but quality varies between brands. Check the fibre content and weave.
